May 18 - Update on strike action in South Africa: There has been no agreement reached between the SATAWU and UTATU unions and industrial action that started on May 10th continues to affect operations at South Africa ports and railways. There are minimal container and vessel operations at the main terminals of Cape Town and Durban and some carriers are omitting port calls. For status on any pending orders check with your operations representative at 732-388-0101 or login to AXIS for further detail. Maersk applies Congestion Recovery Surcharge on South Africa shipments starting May 19, 2010 Be advised that Maersk has posted a Congestion Recovery Surcharge of USD 75 per TEU in response to the financial costs incurred from the industrial action at the ports. The surcharge will be effective on May 19, 2010 for all containers gated in at local terminals and containers gated in May 19th at foreign ports destined for South Africa. Transshipment containers will be exempt from the charge. Maersk has not indicated the possible duration or when withdrawal/suspension of the surcharge may take place, but we will advise when we have further information. There has been no announcement from Safmarine or MSC on a surcharge at this date. |
